The ruins of the Altnußberg and Weißenstein castles certainly belong among the most visited historical sites in the immediate vicinity – in the first case, it is the largest and oldest castle in the Bavarian Forest, dating from the end of the 12th century. Großer Arbersee – The Great Maple lake

The small waterfalls and marshy hollows along the impressive lake wall of the Great Maple Lake are home to one of the most impressive remnants of primeval forest in the Bavarian Forest area.

There is a 2 km long educational trail around the lake, also suitable for strollers. Here you can rent a paddle boat and explore the lake from a completely different perspective.

Another attraction is the forest sledge track, which is located right next to the lake shore and offers a lot of fun both for kids and their parents.

Kleiner Arbersee - Little Maple Lake

On the west side of Grosser Arber lies Little Maple Lake - a remnant of the Ice Age.

The lake wall of Small Maple Lake and the surrounding steep rock formations, more than 100 m high, are more or less still in their original state. In this area strongly influenced by the action of the glacier, you can observe unique plants in the immediate vicinity of gushing water sources such as peat bogs and waterlogged spruce trees rich in ferns, mosses and lichens.

At the end of the 19th century, Little Maple Lake was used for the transport of wood, after the construction of the dam, its area more than tripled from 2.9 hectares to 9.6 hectares. At the same time, in the peripheral parts of the former lake, islands formed by tightly intertwined roots of wetland vegetation were detached, which are lighter than water due to the high proportion of peat and have survived to this day as so-called "floating islands", these are not firmly connected to the lake bed and rise and fall according to how the water level moves.

The short circuit around the lake is suitable for families with strollers in dry weather with certain restrictions. The round trip takes approximately.
